Rimadyl for Dogs : Alleviating Arthritis Pain

Rimadyl for Dogs

We adopted Aces about 10 years ago from the animal shelter. It didn’t take very long for us to understand how Springer Spaniels got their name. It was no obstacle for Aces with the five foot high fence and he enjoyed having the run of the yard.

Unfortunately, after his runs he usually has a hitch in his giddy-up. Not long after that, we learnt that Aces had hip dysplasia. It was very common among Springer Spaniels. After diagnosis by our vet, we decided that Aces should undergo surgery for both his hips using triple pelvic osteotomy or TPO.

Aces was back to his good old self after resting for a few weeks, we made sure that he is as comfortable as he can be during his recovery. For the next 8 years or so, Aces was his regular “springer” self: running and springing about. We made sure he maintained his weight to keep stress off his hips by paying special attention to his diet. Every now and then he would hop to accomodate his lack of motion in his hips, other than that he was alright. However, as he is approaching his ninth birthday, we are beginning to see a more apparent limp and hip distress. We learnt that it is the onset of arthritis from our vet.

Dog arthritis inflicts a lot of pain. Aces couldn’t tell us about his pain, but we can clearly see it through his movements. He moves a lot slower and has difficulty climbing the stairs or getting into our car. It kills us to see Aces suffer arthritis in silence.

Dog arthritis is similar to the human arthritis in some ways. It is an inflammation of the joints. There are mainly two types of dog arthritis: degenerative and inflammatory. Osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis) comes when the cartilage of the joints break down. This usually happens when there is stress on the bones through the years.

To relieve Aces’ pain, we use a regimen of Rimadyl and Glucosamine. But the vet told us that the pain threshold for dogs is incredibly high. As Aces has gotten slower and more immobile, it is hard to make decisions about our beloved dog’s future. As his hips and mobility have weakened, we are trying to manage his quality of life. We are trying to hold onto him as long as we can, he’s been part of our family for about 10 years now and he deserves every right to live.
